There are several ways you can become involved in the wonderful world of Roller Derby with Suburbia Roller Derby.
Become a Skater!
When are tryouts and who can join?
Suburbia holds tryouts in the spring and the fall. Watch our Facebook page or this site to be the first to know when the next round is coming up! We welcome skaters of any skill level, 18 and older. Roller Derby is a wonderful sport because it is so inclusive. We have active skaters in their early 20s to late 40s. If you have the passion and drive to play a competitive contact sport we can get you the rest of the way!
Tryouts for next season are scheduled for October 21st and 23rd of 2019, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. If you are interested in trying out, please CLICK HERE and fill out the form.
What you will need…
A positive attitude: This will be one of the most important tools in your roller derby toolbox.
Safety Gear: Helmet, mouth guard, elbow pads, wrist guards, knee pads and, of course, skates!
Commitment: You must be available Monday and Wednesday evenings. We also practice bright and early on Sunday mornings. Our practice location is at the Police Athletic League in Yonkers. Members are also required to spend some free time working community events and must participate in one of our committees.
I’m interested … what do I do now?
If you are interested in trying out all you have to do is email info@suburbiarollerderby.com.
If you are on the fence about joining us for tryouts you can come to Skate It Out!, our monthly open skate session. It offers newer skaters the opportunity to develop their basic skills and more experienced skaters the ability to just skate it out! This will be done as a group and there will also be individual skaters available to help those at different levels.
Cost is $10.
Make sure to bring: a helmet, mouth guard, elbow pads, wrist pads, knee pads, and SKATES! If you would like to borrow some gear just let us know in advance and we can work it all out for you. If you are interested in Roller Derby this is a great place to start!
If you have any questions or for the need to obtain loaner gear please email info@suburbiarollerderby.com.
Transfer Skaters
We welcome experienced skaters on a rolling basis. You must be able to pass your WFTDA Minimum Skills Requirements with ease. Please email info@suburbiarollerderby.com for more information.
Become an Official
Love the sport but don’t want the bruises? Become an Official! We always have a need for more referees and non-skating officials. Our referees and NSOs watch over us and make sure we are being safe. After all, they are our Neighborhood Watch! Email info@suburbiarollerderby.com for more information.
Become a Volunteer
Roller Derby takes a lot of time and dedication. It is a wonderful sport and Suburbia is an incredible family to be a part of. If you would like to be a part of the family and help, without the time commitment, we welcome you to volunteer with us. Volunteering would mean helping us out at community events and/or helping us produce our home games. Email info@suburbiarollerderby.com for more information and to be placed on our volunteer list.
We encourage you to come see what it’s like on the other side of the picket fence!
